Pinned post

Hashtags are useful here so I’m proposing to tag posts of interest to working musicians / music workers / music writers / anyone for whom music is vocation… (muso is a britishism I picked up from reading the weeklies in the 80s…)

During the pandemic, people who bought tickets to concerts often didn't go, a serious problem for musicians and for venues, because no-shows don't buy drinks or merch. No-shows are still at record high levels, as if people have lost the emotional habits that once made them comfortable with going out to hear music in groups.

@dada_drummer explains:

Disappointing but not unexpected verdict from the UK govt agency that has been examining music streaming - they don’t see any problem for consumers, and therefore will not intervene in this disastrous situation for creators

Unfortunately I have to stop actively working on #Metatext for a while due to health issues. I really wish I could implement Mastodon 4 features and squash every bug, but it's not possible for me to do so right now.

I know the app has become important to a lot people, so I'm open to a new maintainer who can carry on its values of privacy and accessibility taking it over if there's interest and a fit. Email if you (or your organization) are interested

Hi all — I’m a songwriter & music industry leader in pursuit of unifying both worlds (personally & professionally). I’ve architected, launched & negotiated/licensed the first user centric model in music streaming, headed economics & currently strategy at SoundCloud, songwrote/recorded a few records and even had a song in an episode of Katie Couric’s “What Your Kids Are Doing You Don’t Know: Marijuana”. Looking fwd to meeting & chatting w all on this new platform (still learning!)

I don’t think music can/will go back to what it was before. Wrote this essay comparing this situation to the sudden end of the big bands in the early 1940s

Show thread

Talking with friends, feels like a lot of musicians are in mourning for the live music world we knew

Lots of Mastodon migration tools out there, but this one is the most intuitive I’ve seen: It indicates who you’re already following, and you can sort by sign-up date so you can run it regularly to find newer accounts. Bravo, @Tibor! #MastodonMigration #TwitterMigration

No kidding (and no real surprise), musk is now talking about the “woke mind virus” and using culture war “for the betterment of all” so as to save “civilization [from] suicide”…

The latest edition of Damon Krukowski's newsletter, Dada Drummer Almanach, is well worth reading. Apparently a lot of people are buying tickets to shows and then not going. Personally, I haven't been to a show since February 2020. I'm not even tempted; I'm like the character in a horror movie who looks down a long tunnel or a staircase into darkness and just says, "Nope." It's a really weird feeling.

An introduction: I'm Ryan Schreiber, founder of Pitchfork (since departed) and author of the weekly What's Good new music newsletter (which is briefly on hiatus while I prepare its comeback on a new platform).

I'm also an artist manager, editorial strategy consultant, and board member at the NYC arts organization The Kitchen, as well as the new startup Charta.

I'm writing a memoir titled WEIRD ERA, about my time in indie music during the 2000s and 2010s. And I'm getting the band back together.

New essay on my substack, Dada Drummer Almanach: about a chance encounter, and why we might not be seeking those out the way we did before

I’ve joined forces with the Featured Artists Coalition (FAC) and the Union of Musicians and Allied Workers (UMAW) to end the practice of venues and festivals taking merch cuts in North America 💯 #MyMerch

#musodon #music #artists #canada #america #musician

UMAW and @cadenceweapon are launching a campaign to end the practice of merch cuts taken by North American venues from artists - these have become more widespread and at steeper percentages since covid lockdown. Check it out at this webpage and please spread the word, this is a pressure campaign to urge venues to sign on voluntarily (400 in UK already have through a related effort by Featured Artists Coalition)

Music is in very serious trouble and UK govt needs to wake up or lose something the rest of the world envies.

Thanks HelpMusicians for everything you do and surfacing this terrifying data.

Two of the best pieces of technology I own were picked from the trash (television and stereo speakers), cause they were extremely high-end once but discarded when the newer thing came around - a newer standard that wasn't necessarily an improvement, at least in my eyes... Something about this moment in social media bringing this to mind... We've let a lot of good technology fall by the wayside, trash-picking some excellent outdated ideas may be order of the day

Feels like this might be a good environment to say: I like teaching have taught and would gladly do it again if anyone knows of a match for my skills in commuting reach of Boston (and/or online)

Show older is a Mastodon instance for people interested in thinking creatively and critically about technology, in the broadest sense. The only requirement is that you keep to the code of conduct! Note: we've paused new signups for a few days while we deal with the #twittermigration influx - please do request an invite, but be aware that for now functions more like a 'waiting list' than a knock on the door, until our numbers stabilise again :-)
